MSCI 101 Honors

Honors Marine Science 101...we rocked some science!

MSCI 101 Honors Class Photo

In 2003, USC offered a separate introductory marine science class for students of the Honors College. Richard Styles was the professor and Dara Hooker was the TA. It was a great semester, and we have the pictures to prove it! We took an AMAZING field trip to the coast November 7-8, 2003.

Field Trip 2003, Day 1
The Marsh

Brooke Southgate, Chanda Cooper, and Bethany Kessel We left Columbia at 6:00 A.M. on a Friday morning. It was still dark and everybody was groggy. We stopped for breakfast at a Burger King. Seated from left to right: Brooke Southgate, Chanda Cooper, and Bethany Kessel. Don't they look chipper and ready to go?
Not so chipper here, though. There was a lot of sleeping on the way to the coast!
Fish count We spent the first day at the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine Biology and Coastal Research. Paul Kenny and the Baruch gave us a great tour of the facilities and an introduction to some of the scientists and the work they do. Then we got to participate in a fish count. Very cool, although pretty messy.
Salt marsh Things to note about salt marshes: they smell funky and the mud gets everywhere! Here, Brian Murphy and others head out for some exploration.
Dara Hooker and Alisha Trail walking back from the salt marsh This is a picture of Dara Hooker and Alisha Trail walking back from the salt marsh. We all cleaned off as much mud as we could and then headed to the USC lab facilities at Baruch to analyze our data.
